Season One Highlights

Reflecting on Season 1: A Whirlwind Debut Year for Windscape

What a year it has been! When we officially launched Windscape, our goal was simple yet ambitious: to bring high-caliber, narrative-driven, and accessible woodwind chamber music straight to the heart of the San Diego community.

As we wrap up this first chapter, we want to take a look back at the milestone performances and collaborations that defined our debut year.

October 19, 2025 – Chamber Fusion at The Thursday Club

We kicked off our journey with an cross-genre collaboration alongside our friends at the Connessa Collective. Gathering at the historic Thursday Club in Point Loma, we filled the hall with a vibrant program highlighting the voices of brilliant modern composers. Audiences were treated to the driving, rhythmic energy of Marc Mellits, the soaring melodies of Kevin Day, and the rich, evocative storytelling of Valerie Coleman. It was the perfect, high-energy launchpad for the ensemble.

October 22, 2025 – Recital Hour at San Diego Mesa College

Just a few days later, we pivoted from contemporary fusion to a masterclass in contrast. For our Recital Hour performance at Mesa College, we leaned into deeply emotional, sweeping orchestrations. The program bridged the traditional and the transformation of classical music, guiding listeners through a sonic timeline featuring Beethoven, Mahler, Ulikhanyan, Shostakovich, and Arutiunian. Performing for a hall filled with engaged students and local music lovers was a seasonal highlight.

January 25, 2026 – Music at the Cafe

As winter rolled in, we wanted to shake up the formal concert experience. We moved out of the traditional theater and into a cozy, casual space for Music at the Cafe. This afternoon performance focused on contemporary classical fusion works specifically arranged for reed quintet.

To make the sensory experience complete, we paired our music with an incredible menu of custom desserts catered by San Diego's own Edelweiss Bakery. There is truly nothing better than pairing a complex, syncopated modern movement with a perfectly baked pastry!

April 26, 2026 – Music with a Story

We closed out our inaugural season by breaking down the "fourth wall" entirely. Music with a Story was a groundbreaking collaborative project where we shared the stage with local improv theater actors.

The actors took the stage to spin spontaneous, vivid narratives directly inspired by the music we played. The evening featured a dramatic, theatrical tug-of-war between the intricate structures of Marc Mellits and the iconic, sharp theatricality of Igor Stravinsky’s L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale). It was funny, unpredictable, and a beautiful testament to how music and theater can feed off one another in real time.
